THE EMPEROR HAS NO CLOTHES…AND HE’S NOT THE ONLY ONE
(On the destruction of the wine cellar in Nestor’s Palace at Pylos)
Much has been heard about the investment project at Helleniko and about the Secretary General of the Ministry of Culture and, therefore, president of the Central Archeological Council, former director of Antiquities Maria Vlazaki. However, as former head of the research department at the Directorate of Restoration of Ancient Monuments (DRAM), I have personal experience of her activities, her integrity and her scientific qualifications, so I feel obliged to recall the following story: In the spring of 2013 I learned, off the record, about the shelter that was under construction at the Palace of Nestor and that for the construction of supporting pillars, a hole had been opened in the middle of the ancient wine cellar. As a consequence, under the gaze of all supervising authorities , the workers broke in pieces and removed , four jars, which were half-buried in the earth The imminent destruction of the monument was certain and I informed the director of DRAM, Demosthenes Svolopoulos, who sent an “extremely urgent” order to the head of the Ephorate of Kalamata, Anna Karapanagiotou for the immediate cessation of the project. She was asked to provide data on the shelter but, although she was legally responsible for the supervision of the project, she referred the matter to the officials at the Ministry’s central service, without giving a direct answer to the questions asked.
At the same time, at a special meeting at the Ministry’s central service, I proposed the immediate cessation of the works on the grounds that antiquities were being destroyed , but the replay of the head of the Directorate of Museum Works, Kostas Frisiras, was: “The contractor will continue his work and will not stop.” Nevertheless, the architect who carried out the study, Kostas Kyriakidis, presented a new, modified proposal in which the supporting pillar was to be removed and placed instead two others outside the monument.. However, the Director of Restoration Eugenia Gatopoulou concealed it and when this became known, the proposal was peremptorily “discussed” but was finally rejected as unfeasible by the director of the Department of Works Androniki Miltiadou. Thus, whereas all those responsible officials, and among them, Maria Vlazaki, were informed about the destruction of antiquities, they showed indifference and the contractor was unimpeded in proceeding to complete his destructive work and, in fact, under the supervision of the archeologist of the Ephorate, Demosthenes Kosmopoulos.
At the second meeting, in November 2013, Maria Vlazaki, with the assistance of Demosthenes Kosmopoulos, in order to conceal their destructive undertaking under some sort of legitimacy, argued arbitrarily and obviously without documentation that these half-buried jars were moveable (?!) findings and that was why they had been moved, in order to be exhibited in the Palace of Nestor Museum at Chora. Here it is important to recall that these were the same jars which, when discovered by the excavator of the Palace Carl Blegen, he wondered, with his scientific authority, whether these were the jars from which the cellarist had offered wine to the Ithacian guests accompanying Telemachus on his journey to Menelaus’s Palace in Sparta.
JUSTICE IS BLIND
However, it is not just the officials of the Ministry’s service that allowed the destruction of antiquities and hoped that the matter would be forgotten. Following my retirement, and after the construction of the shelter had been completed, I filed a petition for a criminal investigation against those responsible for the destruction. But, the District Attorney Maria Koletti closed the case adopting the defendant’s argumentation (word for word with quotation marks), while the data provided by me were judged to be “a different scientific approach that was not adopted, which renders the plaintiff ‘not objective’ as to the outcome of the matter”!! In other words, instead of investigating, as she ought, whether my claims proved a breach of duty on the part of the defendants (officials of the Ministry’s service), the District Attorney, accepted their claims and closed the case. What proves the inadequacy – if nothing else – of the District Attorney’s investigation is the fact that she did not requested the submission of any photographic material from the construction site, in order to have all crucial information necessary to form her judgment
